Beat Dissappointment

We’ve all been there. We set a goal for ourselves, we get excited, we create a strategy (sometimes), and we start doing it. But a few weeks pass by, and life happens. We don’t achieve it, and disappointment kicks-in. Does this sound familiar? Apparently this is the story that many of my friends and I share in common. But what if I tell you that we can become invulnerable to disappointment? And the answer, my friend, lies in the very definition of disappointment:

[disappointment is the] “sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations” (Oxford Languages)

Let’s just focus on the highlighted part: “nonfulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations”. And add a pinch of stoicism.

Since disappointment is triggered by the nonfulfillment of our own hopes or expectations, it’s logical to think that if we, somehow, find a way to make all our hopes and expectations achievable for us, we will rarely find ourselves in a place of disappointment, right?

Well, here’s when I want to introduce to you one of the main stoic pillars: the Dichotomy of Control. Which basically is to distinguish between the things that are in our control, and the things that aren’t. So that we can focus on the things we can control, and let go of the things we don’t. And with this, we free ourselves a lot of energy to do what really matters in our life, and to really move the needle (and as you may have guessed, free us from disappointment).

Picture this: You just met a great new girl (or guy) you find very attractive. You both talk for a bit and you ask for her phone number. She gives it to you, and you start a great relationship. You start to go out together, and things are going great. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Let’s propose two scenarios:

  • Scenario A: You begin to create illusions and stories in your head about how great your relationship is going to be, you begin to fantasize with the idea that she feels the same way too, and a snowball of hopes and expectations starts to build up. You’re unconsciously placing your own peace into something you cannot control at all: another person’s feelings and/or decisions.

  • Scenario B: You acknowledge your feelings towards her and realize that you would like to try to begin a romantic relationship with her. But you also realize that it’s useless (literally, there’s no use for it; use-less) to create hopes or expectations out of something you cannot control. Instead, you decide to use that energy instead focusing on the things you do control: being your better self. Or as I stealed (like an artist) from Dr. Grace Lordan, developing your “Me+”.

And I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have hopes nor expectations. I’m saying that we should only set hopes and expectations for ourselves that we can control. Otherwise, it’s just a path to unease uncertainty, lack of peace, and yes, many times disappointment. Because we would’ve been trying to control or predict something we cannot control at all.

Don’t get me wrong. Of course you do get excited around her, and the idea of starting a romantic relationship with her thrills you. In the end, action is triggered by motivation; and motivation is triggered by an impulse you want to satiate. We don’t stop being human after all. But also, you acknowledge the limits of the things you can control, and never place your peace and happiness into something you cannot control. I mean, you wouldn’t bet all your savings into a random roulette, right? Then, why would you do that same thing with something as sacred as your peace and happiness?

Let’s wrap this thought by diving into a very interesting (and powerful) topic that will add the final layer of protection for disappointment: perception.

Perception plays a huge role in our overall satisfaction (and dissatisfaction) of life. I mean, just take a look at Viktor Frankl’s experience at the holocaust. He says in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, that he could predict who was going to die in the next few days based on the meaning they gave to the situation (they were in Auschwitz). And you know what’s meaning? Well, literally is how you perceive the situation. And thanks to the experience of these men, we can see in a magnifying glass the impact of perception (meaning) in our life.

Perception directly impacts the quality of our life. But you want to know what’s the best thing? Perception is a decision that we all have the capacity to control whether it becomes our best ally or our worst enemy.

So remember, the only one that can allow ourselves to feel harmed or disappointed is oneself. But we also have the autonomy to decide not to.
